Meet: Jason Schoonover, communication specialist at EVOLVE Adoption & Family Services
I love telling stories.
That’s one reason I’m excited to be one of the newest staff member here at EVOLVE, where I’ll be tasked with bringing our story and your stories to our friends and partners. I come with a newspaper background, and I spent eight years as a reporter and editor for a small town newspaper and magazine. I’ll be responsible for producing this email moving forward.
I’m a new St. Paul resident after being a part-timer for about a year since my fiancee, Megan, lives in St. Paul and co-owns Groundswell, a café, coffee shop and bakery in Midway near Hamline University. I also double as an occasional dishboy, floor sweeper and general helper at the cafe. Megan and I are getting married in October in St. Paul so, as you can guess, we’re knee-deep in wedding planning. When I’m not working, I enjoy working out and running — either outside or at our neighborhood YMCA — collecting records and listening to Audible audiobooks.
I want to hear from you! If you have a story tied to EVOLVE or want to learn more about one of EVOLVE’s services or facets, feel free to contact me at email@example.com or at 651-342-2579.
Hometown: Hollandale, Minnesota
Current City: St. Paul, Minnesota
What’s your past work experience?
I graduated from Bethel University in 2009 with degrees in journalism and English Literature and writing. I’ve spent most of the time since working for Boone Newspapers Inc., briefly at the Albert Lea Tribune as an intern and in a temporary position before spending seven and a half years at the Austin Daily Herald as a reporter, news editor, and then managing editor. I was also the co-editor of Austin Living Magazine.
My family has a long history with social work and family services, and I wanted a job where I was more actively seeking change after many years in the news industry.
What’s a fun fact or story about you most people don’t know?
I once knuckle-bumped Ray Manzarek, the keyboardist and co-founder of The Doors (In my defense, I went in for a handshake; he countered with the knuckles). I interviewed him when he played a concert in Austin, Minnesota.
If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you’d buy?
I’d probably book a trip.
What books would you want on a deserted island?
“The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, “Slaughterhouse-Five” by Kurt Vonnegut, “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee.
What are some activities on your bucket list?
Travel, write a book
What’s your No. 1 vice or guilty pleasure?
My fiancee’s baked goods (Earl grey cookies, rosewater pistachio cookies, berry cheesecake coffee cake).
