Resource: Summer is Full of Possibilities!

Summer break is a widely loved time of the year! When the last school bell rings, students race out the door and often leave all thoughts of multiplication tables and vocabulary lists behind. However, summer learning has a significant positive impact on both academic and social-emotional development.

Summer slide is the phenomenon where students lose academic skills over the summer months.

Luckily, during the summer, students can move at a more relaxed pace and focus on subjects they are interested in. This is great to encourage love of learning! With that in mind, EVOLVE Family Services offers some resources to keep kids engaged.

We understand that accessibility to many kinds of activities during the summer months can be difficult. However, The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) has offered resources to support schools, libraries, and other community organizations to provide children and families more high-quality summer opportunities.

Here are a few ideas off the list of opportunities provided by the MDE:

  • Visit the STEM of Minnesota website for a list of opportunities and other STEM resources.
  • The Metropolitan Library Service Agency (MELSA) smARTpass program is a great way to keep kids learning this summer! This project offers metro area library users free or discounted admission to a range of Twin Cities museums and performances.
  • Visit MetaMetrics’ Summer Learning Initiatives website to promote and encourage participation in reading and math programs, print flyers and certificates, and more.
  • Print a Minnesota Summer Reading Challenge Bookmark.
