What is Giving Tuesday?

Giving Tuesday started in the U.S. in 2012 as an addition to the Black Friday and Cyber Monday events that have marked the kickoff of the holiday season—the season when people tend to do the most giving! While events like Give to the Max Day are local to Minnesota, Giving Tuesday is a global event fueled by social media and efforts to work together in support of important causes and organizations.

The philosophy is that people want to give and share with others about giving, which prompts others to participate and get creative about giving in their own communities. In the past seven years, Giving Tuesday has become the largest giving movement in the world.

When is Giving Tuesday?

Giving Tuesday happens on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving each year, but the movement encourages people to think about how they can give back to their community any time of year.

This year, Giving Tuesday kicks off on December 3rd, 2019—be sure to mark your calendars!

How can I participate?

Participating is simple—just give back! Givingtuesday.org provides a list of participating organizations to donate to and provides information about local movements happening on Giving Tuesday.

There are also plenty of other ways to make a difference. You can create a change in your community by giving your time through volunteering. You can also donate money, collect food and goods for a donation drive. Share your voice by advocating for a cause that is important to you. Get creative with how you give—who knows, maybe your voice will inspire others to give as well!
